Tyndale House Foundation News: Literacy Matters

Participants in Pamoza’s literacy training in Malawi

At Tyndale, we talk a lot about the importance of making the Bible understandable, accessible, and available to all people. That’s the reason we invest so much in the New Living Translation—Scripture needs to be accurate and readable to be properly understood. But what if you can’t read? According to the United Nations, 773 million adults worldwide are functionally illiterate. It doesn’t matter how much effort and money is poured into Bible translation if you can’t read the result.

THF partners such as Faith Comes by Hearing, Devar Partners, OneWay Ministries, and others are meeting the needs of people who can’t read God’s Word by creating and distributing audio Bibles. Others, like Biblica, Deaf Bible Society, and Whole Word Institute, are creating video resources for deaf people. But others take a different approach. This year, several THF partners are focusing on literacy programs that teach children and adults to read in communities where illiteracy is high. Historically, literacy training had to be preceded by developing a written version of languages that had always been only oral. Today, most of the world’s languages have a written form, and artificial intelligence is making it easier and faster than ever to create tools like dictionaries and lexicons to aid in literacy training.

Tyndale House Foundation is investing in these kinds of programs through partners like SIL International, Pamoza, and Village Schools International. Please pray with us that more and more people will learn to read so they can truly internalize God’s Word in written form for themselves.
